Approximately the size of the continental United States, Australia is the worlds third most popular destination for learning English. 200,000 foreign students study in Australia every year. With its good weather and laid back lifestyle it's not hard to see why Australia is a popular choice. Also the cost of studying in Australia is significantly cheaper than other locations. The population of Australia is over twenty-one million. The capital is Canberra with a population of 340,000 (the eight largest city). Australia has an advanced infrastructure and high educational standards. Reputable language schools are listed on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Individual schools can be searched at this link. Schools that are not listed are not eligible to accept students requiring student visas. NEAS is an independent organisation ensuring quality standards for English language schools.
Australia is a very multicultural country, especially in the cities, endowing a wealth of ideas, cuisines and lifestyles. 23% of the population is foreign-born, and over 40% of Australians are of mixed cultural origins. One of Australia's biggest attractions is its natural beauty. The landscape ranges from sun baked deserts to tropical rainforest, not to mention the thousands of beaches scattered along the coasts. Its cities blend are a mix of Eurasian enthusiasm for art and food with a laid-back love of sport and the outdoors. You don’t need to spend money to enjoy Australia. It costs nothing to appreciate Australia's natural beauty. There are more than 500 national parks and beaches which cost nothing. As well as excellent galleries and museums with free entry. While Australians are known primarily for their love of sport, Australian cities are also great places for art lovers. With cinema, literature, music, theatre, dance and the visual arts, Australia's cities all offer a great opportunities to explore the culture. Thanks to the large migrant community there is a huge variety of great restaurants to suit all budgets. Public transport is excellent and affordable. The nightlife is also not to be missed. The shopping is also excellent with a wide range of options. Many Australian cities have really interesting shopping from boutique shops for designer goods to markets where everything’s a bargain. Australians have a reputation of being laid back and friendly. The pace of life is more relaxed than the US and the UK. There is almost a conscious effort not to avoid snobbery and class consciousness.
Australia is temperate, most of the country receives over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. The summer is from December to March. The hottest region is the northern two-thirds of the continent, which experiences humid and wet conditions in summer. Winter is from June to August, which in the north is warm with mild nights. The south is colder and wet, though there is still sunshine. Australia has a relatively pleasant climate with excellent summers and mild winters. It can be hot in the summer with temperatures reaching over 30°C. These highs can be made unpleasant with humidity, especially in the north of the country. Melbourne and Sydney have warm summers and mild winters, which aren't particularly wet but when the rain falls it come down in buckets.
More information can be found at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.
The Australian dollar is the legal currency of Australia. Australia uses a dollars and cents system of decimal currency with 100 cents in a dollar. Australia was the first country to develop and fully introduce polymer banknotes (plastic) which are durable and water proof.
Compared to some other countries such as the UK and the US, Australia is a good alternative. Although the Australian dollar has risen in value in recent years the courses and course of living are still good value. For accommodation, food and entertainment you should budget at least $250 per week.
Banks are usually open Monday to Friday from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. In cities they stay open all day. Automatic Teller machines (ATMs) accept cards with the 'Plus' and 'Cirrus' symbols, meaning you can withdraw from your home country account.
Some Australian banks provide the service of opening accounts before you leave your home country. The bank homepages below link to these services.
It is very easy to set up a bank account in Australia if you do so within six weeks of arrival. Simply open an account at the branch with your passport (with visa) and a postal address and the bank will open an account and send you an ATM card. After six weeks additional identification requirements come into effect. These requirements consist of a hundred point system, where certain documents are given a point rating. A passport Or birth certificate is equal to 70 points. A driver’s licence equals forty points. A card or document where your name appears equals 25 points. If you have a student card, a bank card and your passport (25 + 25 + 70 = 120) you have enough documentation to open an account.
traveltowork.co.uk allows you to open a bank account from most countries.
Tipping in exchange for good service isn't very common although it is starting to catch on in fancy restaurants in larger cities. Despite the increasing number of people tipping, the average person doesn't tip and even in more expensive restaurants it is quite normal to pay the exact change for your meal. It is rare to tip in pubs or bars, which also means that pub meals are tip-free. It is not necessary to tip in cafes though some will have tip bowles at the counter and if you would like to tip for good service this will usually be appreciated.
Foreign students are permitted to work 20 hours per week and full time on holidays. Those on working holidays visas are not permitted to work more than three months in one job. Jobs in retail, restaurants, cafés and bars have a wage of $10 – 20 per hour. There are a number of options for students with limited English such as fruit picking, bartending, events catering and shop work. Permission is needed before beginning work. This can be done on line this link or by post using the printable version of form 157P. The application charge for a student visa with permission to work is $60. Before beginning work you should have a T.F.N. (tax file number), the on-line application is available from the Australian Office of Taxation. A tax file number ensures that the tax is not over-charged and it makes it easier to find a job. Once you have a tax file number you will be able to able to apply for a tax return at the end of the financial year. Some websites for job seekers;
The easiest way to find work in bars or restaurants is to visit with a copy of your C.V. and ask to see the manager.
